What do a scrape in the sand, a hole in a mudbank, and a woven pouch hanging from a branch have in common? They are all nests -- the nurseries that birds build to protect their young. The quest to keep hatchlings safe can inspire ingenious solutions. For instance, marsh wrens build decoy nests, and weaver birds build fake entrances to confuse their enemies. Join us to explore some of the amazing strategies that various species of birds use to design nurseries that work well in their habitats.
Presented by scientist and storyteller Bob Lewis, winner of the American Birding Association's Chandler Robbins Award for excellence in teaching. His life list includes more than 5,500 birds, and he has a story for each of them.
This program is part of Hayward Public Library's Bay Area Birding series. Next in the series: August 1, A Bird's Rainbow.
Sponsored by Friends of Hayward Library.
