To go birding at "The End of the World," our presenter sailed to the island of South Georgia -- about halfway between the bottom of South America and the top of Antarctica. Once a whaling and then a sealing station, South Georgia hosts one of the richest concentrations of life on the planet. Thousands of penguins, albatross, petrels and other sea birds nest there.
This presentation will be packed with photos, stories, and insights about colonial nesting birds, sea mammals, and birds of the nearby Falkland Islands. We will also hear an uplifting account of how -- when the island was threatened by environmental collapse -- a bold habitat restoration project returned the island to vibrant biodiversity.
Presented by scientist and storyteller Bob Lewis, winner of the American Birding Association's Chandler Robbins Award for excellence in teaching. His life list includes more than 5,500 birds, and he has a story for each of them.
This program is part of Hayward Public Library's "Bay Area Birding" series. Next in the series: May 9, Bird Nurseries.
Sponsored by Friends of Hayward Library.
