The Lunar New Year show has become a beloved tradition for families in and around City of Hayward. As the holiday approaches, the Hayward Library is thrilled to bring another spectacular performance to the community!

In 2024, Pangut from the Korean high school student club was an absolute highlight, and we’re excited to announce that Hansamo is returning! They will dazzle the audience with traditional Korean Samgomu Dance, Nanta, and Pangut drumming, delivering a high-caliber performance that you won’t want to miss!

And who doesn’t love the iconic Lion Dance? For the first time, this vibrant and energetic tradition will come to our new Downtown Library! Legend Kungfu from Hayward will also return with their incredible martial arts showcase. Having performed at events like Trunk-or-Treat, AAPI Heritage Month at the library, and other local festivals, these talented students continue to impress with their skill and dedication.

This special event is generously supported by the Friends of the Hayward Library! This is a FREE event, and ALL are invited. Bring your family and friends for a delightful time! We’re eagerly looking forward to these amazing performances and can’t wait to celebrate together with our community!

Traditional RED ENVELOPES will be handed out to children at the end of the show!

'Hansamo
Hansamo is a non-profit organization where Korean American middle and high school students and their parents in the Bay Area come together to celebrate Korean language and traditions. We promote cultural understanding and enrich our community through performances.

Pangut
Pangut, also known as Pungmul Nori, is a Korean folk music tradition used to bring joy and excitement to festivals and celebrations. It incorporates four main percussion instruments: 꽹과리 (Kkwaenggwari), 장구 (Janggu), 북 (Buk), and 징 (Jing), along with one wind instrument, the 태평소 (Taepyungso).
The term "Pan" refers to a gathering place, while "Gut" signifies coming together joyfully for unity and good fortune. Essentially, Pangut is a vibrant performance where a multitude of people unite, enjoying themselves while wishing for good luck.

Samgomu
Samgomu, which directly translates to "three drums," is a traditional Korean drum dance featuring intricate movements that blend percussion and dance. Performers play three drums mounted on stands, creating a mesmerizing display of synchronized rhythms and elegant choreography. Samgomu is often showcased at cultural events to highlight Korea's rich heritage and artistic traditions.

Nanta
Nanta is a dynamic Korean-style drumming performance that dramatizes the rhythms of Samulnori, utilizing a large traditional Korean barrel drum called Buk. The powerful sound of the Buk, resembling a heartbeat, combined with our energetic performances, effectively demonstrates our Korean-American heritage and spirit."
