Instructor:
Ruey Lin Syrop is a visual artist and Hayward Arts Council member. She works in oil, acrylic, pastels, mixed media, Chinese ink, and photography. She makes art as her way of expressing her ideas and connecting with others.
About the artists:
Elaine de Kooning was a prominent American painter known for her skill as a portraitist. Her energetic figurative works provided an important perspective in the milieu of Abstract Expressionism. “A painting to me is primarily a verb, not a noun,” she once said. “An event first and only secondarily an image.” Born Elaine Fried on March 12, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY, she went on to study at Hunter College and the American Artists School. Throughout her career, De Kooning often painted friends and contemporary figures, including a commissioned portrait of President John F. Kennedy. In the next few decades, the artist worked in a style influenced by prehistoric cave paintings and held teaching positions held at institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University. De Kooning died on February 1, 1989 in Southampton, NY. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, among others.
Perle Fine was an American painter known for her expressive abstract works. Inspired by music, dance, and the natural world, Fine investigated the possibilities of nonobjective art. “Color is always a motivation. Mixing color, you know, is a very joyous occupation for me because there was so much excitement at what would happen when one color was placed next to another”. Born on May 1, 1908 in Boston, MA, where her Russian immigrant parents settled upon arriving. Fine moved to New York to study art, meeting her future husband Maurice Berezov. The artist died on May 31, 1988 in East Hampton, NY. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, among others.
