Join us for Watercolor Winter Landscape: a painting workshop with Anselm Yew! 

The first part of the workshop will be a brief discussion on the nature of watercolor and about strategies for painting in watercolors. 

Strategies include:  

  • working from light to dark

  • working background to foreground

  • working from general to specific

  • seeing shapes instead of lines

Students will then be led through some brief exercises in which they will discover for themselves how watercolor behaves. They will learn about: 

  • using more watered-down paint vs loaded with pigment, and how this affects paint flow and color

  • painting a gradient

  • holding the brush and making marks with the brush

  • glazing

For the remaining time, drawing on the concepts introduced, students will be led step-by-step in painting a simple winter landscape.

Materials will be provided at no charge. However, if you’d like to bring your own brushes and supplies you’re more than welcome to do so.

Registration is recommended! Space allowing, walk-ins are welcome, too. 

Anselm Yew is a freelance illustrator and fine artist living in San Francisco. He has a BA in psychology from Northwestern University in Illinois, and a BFA in animation and illustration from the SF Academy of Art University. With a career spanning over twenty years, Anselm has been involved in a wide range of creative commercial endeavors in 2D animation and layout, illustration, comics, and concept art. In the last decade he has been exploring more personal artistic interest through watercolor and ink. 

Art for Older Adults (AOA) is a series of free art classes at the Weekes Branch Library, presented in collaboration between the Hayward Library and the Hayward Arts Council.

Art for Adults and Active Seniors (AAAS) en Weekes es una serie de clases de arte gratuitas, presentadas en colaboración entre la Biblioteca de Hayward y el Consejo de las Artes de Hayward.

Anselm Yew es un ilustrador independiente y artista plástico que vive en San Francisco. Tiene una licenciatura en Psicología de la Universidad Northwestern en Illinois y una licenciatura en Bellas Artes en Animación e Ilustración de la Academia de Arte de San Francisco. Con una carrera de más de veinte años, Anselm ha participado en una amplia gama de proyectos creativos comerciales en animación y diseño en 2D, ilustración, cómics y arte conceptual.
