Join us at the Weekes Branch Library for a fun and educational hands-on art experience for the whole family!

At the beginning of the class, instructor Ruey Syrop will briefly introduce the work of Hung Liu (1948–2021), a renowned Bay Area painter who immigrated to the United States from China in 1984. A prolific artist, much of her work focused on figurative painting and portraiture, and she exhibited widely in the Bay Area and across the country. The attached picture is an artwork by Hung Liu. In this art class we will use some of her portraits as inspiration to create our own, drawing with oil pastels.

This class is designed to inspire children and their families to embrace the joy of art, discover hidden talents, and enjoy time together.

Family Fun Art is a series of free art classes, presented in collaboration between the Hayward Library and the Hayward Arts Council.

Ruey Lin Syrop received a BA degree in Fine Art from Taiwan Normal University, and taught art at a Taipei high school for three years. In 1988, she immigrated to the United States, and settled in Hayward, California. She has been a participating member of the Hayward Arts Council, A.R.T. Inc., Sun Gallery, Hayward Area Historical Society, and group art exhibitions for many years, including solo exhibitions in San Francisco and Oakland.
