Event Details

Join us at the Weekes Branch for an artistic celebration of Native American Heritage Month! We are delighted to introduce you to Hayward Arts Council artist Ann Maloney Mason, who will lead an unforgettable Acoma pot drawing lesson for seniors.

Native American Heritage Month is celebrated every November nationwide, honoring the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of America's First Peoples and Alaska Natives. It's a time to reflect on the history of Indigenous peoples, their resilience, and to address important contemporary issues like intergenerational trauma and the impacts of climate change.

The instructor will bring an Acoma pot to share with the class. Acoma pots typically have thin walls, fine lines, and eye-catching designs. Originally, the pottery was produced for practical purposes, such as water jugs for long hunts or seed jars for storing seeds to plant in the spring. Today, they’re valued not only as the stunning art pieces they are, but as vessels of cultural memory and preservation.

Participants may choose to create a drawing of this pot or design their own pot-inspired artwork. Photocopies and graphite paper will be provided to assist them in the process. Registration is recommended but walk-ins will also be welcome as long as space allows.

Ann Maloney-Mason is a Bay Area Artist. Her chosen medium is acrylic and ink. Her work tends to be colorful and full of energy. Her bright colors and lively brushwork make for exciting and unique pieces and her subject matter is varied.
The objective of her work is to lift spirits and bring joy.

Art for Older Adults (AOA) is a series of free art classes at the Weekes Branch Library, presented in collaboration between the Hayward Library and the Hayward Arts Council.

Our last AOA classes for this year will be held on December 5th. Mark your calendars, invite your friends, and come join the fun!
